A client from Corpus Christi, Texas brought his 2015 F-350 King Ranch to Bay Area Audio Visions in search of a significant audio system upgrade. Our team looked at the truck with the client while discussing what he liked about the factory audio system and what he wanted to improve. We went back into the showroom and had a listen to several different speakers and subwoofers while finalizing the system design. The client agreed to our proposal, so we booked an appointment to do the work.
Source Integration
Because the factory radio is so integrated into the truck, we chose to leave it in place and connect to it using a Helix DSP processor. We tested the frequency response and signal voltage at the output of the factory amplifier to confirm it would be compatible with the DSP. This signal processor has integrated speaker-level input terminals to make connections to factory audio systems quick and reliable. Using the processor, we can set crossovers, time alignment and equalization to the front and rear speakers, as well as the subwoofers.
Power System
Signals from the Helix DSP go to a pair of JL Audio HD Series amplifiers. The subwoofers are powered by an HD750/1, and an HD600/4 powers the door speakers. We fed power to the amplifiers with a JL Audio 2 AWG amp kit. This kit uses premium OFC copper wiring for maximum current transfer and reliability.
We created an amp rack that bolts to the rear seat mounting bolts. The rack holds both amplifiers, the DSP and the factory amplifier. If we ever have to service any of the components, we can unbolt the amp rack in about a minute to gain access to everything.
JL Audio Speakers and Subwoofers
We installed a set of JL Audio C3-570 5×7-inch coaxial speakers in the front and rear doors. These speakers bolt right into the factory speaker locations and maintain the completely stock look of the truck. We treated the doors with a layer of HushMat sound-deadening to improve speaker performance and reduce background noise in the truck while driving. We also constructed a subwoofer enclosure for three JL Audio 10TW3 subwoofers that fit behind the passenger side of the rear seat.
Client Wowed By His New Ford F-350 Audio System
The client returned to Bay Area Audio Visions to have his first listen to the truck. He loved how tight the bass was and how deep the JL subs played. The system got good and loud, and was easy to use. The best part is that, because we didn’t make any changes to the factory radio wiring, the vehicle warranty is still intact.
