A client from here in Corpus Christi, Texas, contacted Bay Area Audio Visions about upgrading the audio system in his Hurricane FunDeck Deck Boat. The factory stereo system worked, but would not play loud enough when he was cruising the ski canals or on a fishing trip. We designed a system that would not only meet his volume requirements, but sound great while doing it. He approved of our proposal, so we scheduled an appointment to start this Hurricane upgrade project.
JL Audio Speakers and Subwoofers
We installed a pair of JL Audio M770-CCX-SG-WH on the lower front panel of each of the forward couches and a second set of M770-CCX-SG-WH speakers in the rear panel of the control cockpit. The rear factory speaker location is home to the last set of M770-CCX-SG-WH speakers.
We mounted a pair of M770-ETXv3-SG-WH enclosed wakeboard tower speakers on the rails around the 150 horsepower Evinrude motor. These speakers are perfect for water skiing or splashing around in the water while the boat is anchored on Lake Corpus Christi.
The end panels of the couches are home to a pair of JL Audio M10IB5-SG-WH 10-inch subwoofers. We reinforced each couch significantly to handle the vibrations from the subwoofers.
System Amplification
To power the speakers, we installed three JL Audio amplifiers. Two M600/6 amplifiers power the coaxial and enclosed tower speakers, and an M600/1 powers the subwoofer. JL Audio rates the M600/6 to produce 75 watts per channel and 200 watts to each of the enclosed speakers. The M600/1 produces up to 600 watts for the pair of subwoofers.
Multi-zone Source
The client selected a Sony MEX-M70BT CD receiver for the system. This radio includes a reverse LCD to make viewing easy in bright sunlight. An integrated Bluetooth receiver handles hands-free calling and high-quality audio streaming. The front panel includes a USB port for a USB memory stick or an Apple iPhone.
We configured the system with two volume zones. The main zone includes the four pairs of speakers and the subwoofers, while the second zone has a dedicated level control for the enclosed speakers. The client wanted the option to control those speakers independently so other boaters would not be “blasted.”
To wrap up the installation, we added a set of auxiliary batteries to extend “party time” without the need to run the motor.
Hurricane Audio System Delivery
The client returned to Bay Area Audio Visions to hear his new system. He was stunned at how loud it played and how clear it was. Even in the open space, bass output was rock-solid with great extension.
