A client brought his amazing 2014 Ford F-150 Raptor to Bay Area Audio Visions in a quest to increase the amount of bass in the truck. We see this scenario daily with factory audio systems – mushy, weak, thin bass that sounds horrible. We talked to the client about his specific goals for the system and realized that he wanted the system to play louder, not just have more bottom end.
Bass And More
We explained that achieving this goal would require more than just a sub. We’ve tried adding a sub in similar installations, but more often than not, that reveals just how underpowered the rest of the speakers are. We proposed a multi-channel amplifier to power a subwoofer and the factory speakers. The client agreed with the plan, so we booked an appointment to start the upgrade.
AudioControl For Integration
We used an AudioControl LC6i to interface with the factory source unit. This unit gives us a good strong signal and sounds excellent. It also provides a remote turn-on output for the new amp. We located the LC6i near the factory amplifier under the center console.
JL Audio Amplifier
We made a mounting panel for a JL Audio XD700/5v2 amplifier that would allow it to sit vertically on the back wall of the truck. The JL amp produces 75 watts per channel on the front and 300 watts for a subwoofer. This extra power for the factory speakers will let them play louder to keep up with the subwoofer. The result will be much better than just using the small factory amp.
We mounted an HD-RLC remote bass knob on the bottom of the steering column cover. This location is convenient and also out of the way.
Custom Subwoofer Enclosure
The next step was the system’s subwoofer. We fabricated a custom enclosure for a JL Audio 10TW3 subwoofer. We used a ported enclosure design to increase output around 35 Hz. The enclosure fits neatly under the passenger side of the rear seat. A recess in the bottom allows the output of the down-firing subwoofer to channel into the vehicle.
Setup And Tuning
Once we installed everything, the next step was to set up the LC6i and the crossovers and sensitivity controls on the amplifier. Proper configuration ensures that the system will play loudly without distorting.
Client Loved His Raptor Bass Upgrade!
When the client returned to Bay Area Audio Visions in Corpus Christi, Texas, to pick up his truck, he immediately hopped in for a listen and loved the way the system sounded. Lots of low-frequency output comfortably filled the vehicle. With the extra power, the midrange speakers did a fair job of keeping up with the sub, giving the system a nicely balanced and realistic sound. If the client wants to improve the system even more, we can upgrade the speakers to make a dramatic difference.
