We don’t see as many two-door Jeep Wranglers as we do four-door models here at the shop, so we knew were in for a challenge when a client brought one in. The owner wanted his two-door Wrangler audio system to rock, and the vehicle’s stock sound system just wasn’t cutting it for him. He listens to a lot of classic rock and is into sound quality more than anything else.
JL Audio Stealthbox The Perfect Choice For This Two-Door Wrangler Audio Upgrade
Even though the amount of bass wasn’t this client’s most important concern, it still needed to be addressed in a practical way, because we are talking about a Jeep here, after all. Enter the well-thought-out and manufactured JL Audio Stealthbox. This vehicle-specific enclosure houses a 10W1v3 subwoofer is already engineered for the Wrangler and is designed with great-sounding low end with lots of impact for all kinds of music. The best thing of all: The subwoofer and electronics get hidden away and locked down. Perfect for a Jeep!
Pioneer Radio Upgrade For Increased Audio Fidelity
At first, the owner kept the factory radio as the source for the system, but after a couple of weeks, it was evident that something was still lacking in performance and features. That’s when we installed a Pioneer AVH-X4700BS. It looks right at home in the dash, keeps the steering wheel controls working and takes the level of performance up another notch. The radio gives the signal to an AudioControl LCQ-1, which was left over from the factory radio installation, but still provides excellent use of its line driver and EQ capabilities.
JL Audio HD Amplifier Powers JL Audio Speakers And Subwoofer
The signal then passes to a single JL Audio HD900/5 amplifier. This powers all the mid and high speakers with 100 watts for each corner. The front speakers are a pair of JL Audio C5-650 components with the midrange behind the factory grille in modified enclosures and the tweeter mounted to custom adapter plates to ensure a perfect fit behind the dash locations. The rear speakers – a set of JL Audio C2-650X coaxials – live in the factory “sound bar” overhead.
The last channel of the five-channel amp powers the JL Audio 10W1v3 in the Stealthbox in a sealed configuration with 500 watts, providing plenty of power to overcome all the associated Jeep road noises and make even the most demanding of music sound fantastic.
When the build was all said and done, the owner ended up with one great-sounding Wrangler. Powerful enough to fill his need to rock, great sound quality to satisfy his discerning tastes and secure enough for a Jeep!
