A repeat client from here in Corpus Christi brought his Majek Xtreme fishing boat to Bay Area Audio Visions for a stereo system. This project started with two pairs of speakers, an amplifier and a source unit. After a while, the “bug” to be the loudest in the ski canal bit him hard, and we did two more rounds of upgrades. This Majek Xtreme audio project was a lot of fun.
Stage 1, Radio, Speakers and an Amplifier
The client had us install two sets of JL Audio M880 8.8-inch speakers on his boat. We powered them with a JL Audio MHD 600/4 four-channel amplifier. A JL Audio MediaMaster MM100s digital media receiver serves as the source for Bluetooth or USB audio from his smartphone. The MM100s also has an AM/FM receiver with RDS and a dedicated weather band receiver.
Stage 2, Subwoofers, More Speakers and More Amplifiers
After enjoying the system for a while, the client decided he wanted more. We fabricated a custom subwoofer enclosure for a pair of JL Audio 12W6v3 12-inch subwoofers. The enclosure is made of MDF and has a durable truck bed coating finish to keep water away from the wood. The subwoofers fire down into the floor of the boat. We also installed another set of M800 coaxial speakers and a set of M770 7.7-inch coaxial speakers. A JL Audio MHD900/5 powers the additional speakers and the subwoofer.
Stage 3, More Speakers and Amplifiers
This audio system was already more than anyone “needs,” but the client was not done yet. We added two sets of JL Audio VeX Powersports speaker pods in this last stage of the project. We clamped the pods to the tubular windshield mounting bracket and installed a second JL Audio MHD600/4 to provide power for them. The amplifiers are stacked on top of each other using a JL Audio HD Stack Kit on a storage shelf in the center console.
We called upon a set of lithium ion auxiliary batteries to improve the system’s play time and provide more than ample current for when the client wants to crank it to 11. As always, the wiring, mounting hardware and supplies is all designed for marine applications. We never skimp on the small stuff just to save a few dollars – we do things right the first time, or we won’t take the job.
Majek Xtreme Audio System
The client now has the loudest boat around. Even at top speed, with more than 250 horsepower propelling the fishing boat to a secret fishing hole or just cruising the canals, the client can hear his music with amazing detail and clarity.
